Insensitive or Criminal?
A Wisconsin teacher has been arrested for the following blog comment about Columbine.
"They knew how to deal with the overpaid union thugs. One shot at a time!" he said, adding they should be remembered as heroes.
While I think what he said was reprehensible, I certainly do not think that it was criminal. What say you?

Yup gotta agree with you - reprehensible but not criminal. The man was obviously angry and allowed his emotions to get the best of him. Freedom of speech can be ugly but it must be allowed.
I suppose, though, if I knew this man that I would have my guard up and my eyes open to suspicious behavior.

Good point. But he may have only been joking. I'd have to read the entire thread and his entire statement in context to know for sure.
Posting again. Well done.
We have to be careful to guard free speech.
This seems to be a reference to historical events, so I suppose it is not incitement.
A more difficult issue is when people speak favourably of terrorism. There is sometimes a fine line between sympathy and incitement.

Hey Matthew! Thanks for stopping by.
Yes, incitement is a worrisome matter.
I agree on this too. Reprehensible but criminal.
People need to stop getting hysterical over words. There is something really wrong with that...
Of course, I do think what he said was off the wall, but it is just words. Judge it, but he is allowed to say it.
Hi dmarks. Glad we can agree.
Rose, thanks for posting. I know, I get really tired of people who get hysterical over a bunch of words that carry no real threat.
In our Detroit area, we recently had some high school students publish photos of themselves with guns and drugs (both were not real)for the purpose of promoting their rap group. They were expelled. The police even confirmed that the photo did not contain real guns or drugs. Again, no threat was nor implied and I feel this was a violation of their constitutional rights. Frankly, I think what the kids did was stupid, but not criminal and certainly not deserving of being expelled from school.
What this teacher did was certainly insensitive and stupid.
Yeah, Michael. Too bad these kids think it is cool to tote guns and drugs. Like you said, stupid but not criminal.
